Why You Should Make Your Workouts Easy

The key to an effective exercise plan is consistency.

Like most things in life, the benefits of exercise compound over time. That means you need to do a little something every day, resulting in big gains over time.

If you make your workouts overly strenuous, chances are at some point you’ll dread the thought of working out. And when you dread working out, you’ll stop doing it.

That’s why easy workouts produce successful exercise routines.

If you tell yourself you’ll make the workout easy today, there is a good chance you’ll get in the gym. Most of us are wired to go toward easy things and away from hard ones.

Once you’re in the gym, you’ve already won. The rest takes care of itself.

For example, I don’t really like lifting weights. But I know it’s good for me.

When I tell myself I’ll make the workout easy, that’s all the motivation I need to get in the gym. I tell myself I’ll just lift light weights today and be out of there in 20 minutes.

And sometimes that’s the case. Sometimes I get in the gym and actually do take it very easy. No problem — I’ve checked the box and maintained the habit.

But more often than not, once I’m in the gym and warmed up, I wind up lifting heavier…
