My Framework for a Healthy Diet

What to eat can be confusing, but it doesn’t have to be.

Below is my framework for a healthy diet. If you follow these guidelines, you can be confident that you are fueling your body right and setting yourself up for sustained good health.

Fill 1/2 Your Plate With Veggies

Vegetables provide the vitamins and minerals your body needs to function well and it is nearly impossible to gain too much weight if you’re eating primarily non-starchy veggies.

Dark leafy greens are the best of the best. Arugula, spinach, kale, and chard are some of my favorites. Select whatever greens you like most and make them the base of a daily salad. This habit alone will set you up for good health.

Once you have filled your daily quota of greens, add other non-starchy vegetables such as asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, onions, mushrooms, peppers, and tomatoes.

Eat as many non-starchy vegetables as you want.

Add Lean Protein

It has been shown that adequate protein supports a healthy weight and body composition (especially if you are doing resistance training exercise). But excessive saturated fat probably isn’t great for your health, so stick with lean forms of protein.
